Which is the best size Le Creuset dutch oven?

In looking into the Le Creuset Dutch Oven, I've discovered one common question asked by consumers prior to making their purchase. If you could only own one, which size and shape is the most popular? Each one has their own pros and cons. To best answer this question you must first determine the food that you cook most frequently and for the number of people. Let’s start out with shape because it is the most straight forward to answer. Le Creuset makes their Dutch oven in two basic shapes, round and oval. They do make some other styles such as heart shaped, nonetheless the most frequent uses make a call for either round or oval. Round - benefits and drawbacks Typically useful for cooking stews, soups and sauces. The round shape fits greatest with the vast majority of stove top burners. Round might not fit all cuts of meat or whole chickens for roasting or braising. Oval – advantages and drawbacks The oval shape is a better fit for whole birds, pot roasts, lamb shanks, etc. The lengthier shape is able to have capacity for more meats or long vegetables including uncut celery or carrots. Oval is most often used in making no-knead bread. The lengthier design might result in the sides of the dutch oven to overhang round burners, which might lead to uneven heat distribution. This can cause the outer ends to not get as heated compared to the middle. The right size, measured in liquid volume, is mainly determined by the quantity of food a person usually cook. A simpler way to look at this is to count how many people you usually prepare food for and if you want food left over. The round dutch ovens range in size from 2 quarts (qt) to 13.25 qt and the oval dutch ovens vary in size from 3.25 qt to 9.5 qt. Round sizes in quarts (qt) 5.5 Qt - Most suitable for 2 people with food left over but can comfortably manage up to 4. 7.25 Qt - Ideal for 4 people with left overs. 9 Qt - Ideal for 6 to 8 13.25 Qt - Best for larger parties. Oval sizes in qt 5 Qt – Ideal for 2 with left overs however can adequately handle up to 4. 6.75 Qt – Best for 4 with left overs. 9.5 Qt – Most suitable for 6 to 8 15.5 Qt – Most suitable for a small army. Conclusion In studying just how people work with their Le Creuset Dutch Ovens and what sizes they use I have found that there's a fairly balanced split between the 5 and 7 qt sizes, but it appears that more folks prefer the oval shape. While describing their choice of oval, they mention the usefulness of the shape. Oval best suits larger cuts and can also be used for stews, soups and sauces, despite the fact that the round is normally more common for this purpose. If you can only have one, cooking soup in an oval dutch oven works just fine. I’d like to include one other bit of information. Evaluate the weight of the different sizes. As outlined by lecreuset.com, their dutch oven weights are as follows: the 5.5 qt weighs 11.25 pounds, the 7.25 qt weighs 12.75 pounds and the 9 qt weighs 16.5 pounds.
